How to get luck without even trying

Survival in everyday life is all about luck. By that I mean, finding a way to express your inner self in such a way as to bring about circumstances that enhance your own innate abilities. Finding luck is easy when you know what those abilities are.

I found luck through my own desperate need to survive. Living for five years with nothing living in a caravan parked by the roadside in the Aussie bush, with all my worldly possessions crammed inside, was a life changing experience.

I found luck purely by chance. Luck came to me in my desperate bid to survive. My struggle opened doors that I would never have otherwise found. Doors to a survival instinct that led me to my life's purpose. That is the secret. Find your life's purpose and survival is automatic. Let me say that again. Find your life's purpose and survival, no matter what your circumstances, is automatic.

2. Who knows what it's like to lose everything?

Nobody can possibly know what it's like to lose everything until it happens to you. It happened to me. I lost not only my home, not only my one-man business which was the end of my entire career, but also my second marriage, my savings, my car and worst of all, my good credit rating. And nobody can tell you what you should do next. The strange thing was, with hindsight wisdom, I really didn't need anyone's advice because in the void that was created something stepped in to fill it ... something I can only describe as luck, destiny, or fate. I was free to follow my true purpose in life at last.

Since it happened to me, and since I had no-one to bail me out at the time ... no rich relatives, no superannuation, no investments, no valuable possessions and no government hand-outs except for a small unemployment benefit, I feel I can speak with some experience. In my book about those experiences I wrote:

"I was still haunted by the memory of a year ago standing, stunned, on a city street in Melbourne in the fading autumn light. After a three hour grilling on the ninth floor of the building right behind me, I had just been declared bankrupt. My personal documents, passport, business files, banking records, credit cards, pretty much everything that represented who I was, and who I might have been, I'd surrendered to the Official Receiver.

"In that moment I had ceased to exist. I had been stripped of my identity and I was nobody. It was an emptiness I could never forget. I just stood there, in shock, watching people rushing off to their homes and families at the end of their day. I had neither. I really thought, in that moment, my life was over.

"The sun was setting as I strolled to my car which I was expecting to lose as well. There it was parked at the kerb like every other car. Except for one noticeable difference. Mine was the one loaded to the roof with all my worldly belongings. But for pots and pans hanging out the windows it could well have been a gypsy caravan.

"As I drove out of the city with barely enough room for me to squeeze into the driver's seat that's exactly how I felt. Like a gypsy. As the suburban houses in rows gave way to thoroughbreds grazing on flat almost treeless plains I was leaving everything familiar. Ahead of me lay the unknown. In my mind there was no tomorrow. And my past I was leaving behind me. As I choked back the lump in my throat I realised I was literally homeless and unemployed."

It's what happened after that fateful day that is the big story ... not the failure and the apparent end of everything but the beginning of my real life. And I did virtually nothing to make it happen. Except, maybe, to let go. You can do it too.

1. An alternative last chance guide to everyday survival

Where do you turn when your life is heading for disaster? Perhaps you or someone in your family has lost their job, you are facing the loss of your precious home, your financial situation is desperate, or any one of a multitude of life's disasters has overtaken you or your family.

I know because, at one time, after running my own successful one-man freelance business for fifteen years, everything in my life turned pear shaped and, within a period of a year, my business failed, as did my second marriage, and I was suddenly homeless, unemployed and unemployable, penniless and without a car and possessions. I was in desperate straits. For the next 5 years I lived in a friend's old caravan parked by the roadside in the Aussie bush. I thought my life was over.

Then the miracles started to happen. Just when I was at the very bottom, when everything looked grim, things began to turn around ... without me doing anything. This is the amazing part, that I did nothing and yet a new life started to open in spite of my hopeless situation. In the letting go I found the 'open sesame' to an alternative survival path.

This is the subject of this blog. To share with you how you too can create miracles from your apparent woes and, incredibly, find what you were meant to do with your life all along. This is the real form of success, a success that is combined with happiness and, well, your true destiny. And you need only change how you think about your life and follow a new path. It's that easy ... and it works.

So this is my little known secret of succes, happiness and survival in the real world.
